Much along the lines of fairness in the dream, if you own a shop, you may not own an apartment as shops all have a dwelling within them (except for four of them). Once an apartment, in a higher part of town or the slums, your apartment is given a key at a later date, and you are allowed to come and go as you please, along with anyone you give the key to. Apartments in a higher part of town a plague is placed outside the door. Any unowned apartment has a plaque with a brass plate, indicating it is owned.
additional note; if you are gone for over a month without notification, just as with a shop, you can lose your property. We know irl comes first, and it always does, but do not be upset if things have moved on. If your space is free still, it is yours upon your return.
